Southlake TX Area Guide

Southlake is a city located in the heart of the Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex in Texas. As of 2000, Southlake’s population was approximately 21,000. Southlake’s prime location is ideal for a weekend retreat full of endless shopping, dining, entertainment and much more. In December 2008, Forbes.com named Southlake the most affluent neighborhood in the United States, based on average median household income estimates. Southlake is an outstanding community where residents and businesses work together to build a community with a strong economy and a great sense of pride.

Southlake History

Settlers first came to the Southlake area in the mid-1800s. Families traveled to the area in search of the resources that the land here had to offer. Many treaties were signed with the Native Americans in the area to create borders. By 1853, a small fort named Fort Worth protected the border to the west, but the U.S. Army was ordered to move farther west. The Texas Legislature authorized the U.S. government to select land for Indian reservations inside Texas, and the last treaty made with the Comanche was signed in 1867. Settlers continued to move into Texas searching for a place to call home, and the boundary was pushed farther west.

Southlake HistoryIn 1965, Southlake upgraded to a city. A volunteer fire department was formed in 1966.
In 1968, city leaders adopted a comprehensive land-use plan, which cost $6,000 and was paid for by contributions from citizens and several utility companies.

In the 1970s, with the assistance of the county, streets and roads were improved greatly. A Home Rule charter passed in 1987allowing Southlake to each year annex land equal to 10 percent of its size.

By the 1990s, many people were moving in and businesses were emerging along Southlake Boulevard. In 1996, the firm of Cooper and Stebbins approached the city with a bold shopping-center concept called Town Square, to make up for Southlake’s nonexistent downtown area. Its center, Town Hall, became home to many city offices.
